Sohar Port

Sohar Saltanat of Oman

This project involved providing fire and life safety consultancy services for a new chemical storage facility in Sohar Port, consisting of 22 buildings. The primary objective was to ensure compliance with the latest NFPA Codes and Standards, as adopted by the Civil Defence and Ambulance Authority (CDAA). The project required a hazardous material storage study and a multi-stage approach to design review and construction administration.

Project Stages and Services

Aman International Engineering team provided a phased approach to address the project's complex requirements for a chemical facility.

Preliminary Design Services

  • Preliminary designs were developed for life safety, fire protection, and fire alarm systems, ensuring they met the minimum requirements of the applicable codes.
  • A crucial part of this stage was a detailed Hazardous Material Storage Study and Report, which analyzed the chemical characteristics and classifications of stored materials. This report determined the maximum allowable quantities (MAQ) and specified the necessary fire protection and life safety measures.
  • The preliminary design package was prepared and submitted to the Civil Defence (CD) for initial approval.

Construction Administration Support Services

  • The contractor's shop drawings and material submittals were reviewed for all fire and life safety systems to ensure they aligned with the approved designs.
  • On-site visual inspections were performed, and the testing and commissioning of the fire protection and fire detection systems was witnessed to verify their full functionality.
  • The final compliance report was prepared and submitted to the CD to obtain the final occupancy permit.

Project Outcome

The project successfully navigated the stringent safety requirements for a chemical storage facility. The detailed hazardous material study and phased design reviews ensured all fire and life safety systems were designed and implemented in full compliance with international and local standards. This work secured the necessary approvals from the Civil Defence, guaranteeing a safe and compliant facility for the storage of chemicals.
