Qashashia Tunnel

Qashashia Tunnel – Makkah, Saudi Arabia

Qashashia Tunnel

Makkah Saudi Arabia

This project involved providing fire and life safety consultancy services for the Qashashia Tunnel in Makkah. The primary objective was to perform a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis to revalidate the tunnel's smoke ventilation system and tenability conditions. This was based on the selected jet fan flow rates and the initially approved system design. The project aimed to ensure compliance with the Saudi Building Code (SBC), NFPA codes, and approval from the local Civil Defence (CD).

Project Stages and Services

Aman International Engineering team provided a focused, multi-stage approach to the project:

Code Analysis & Design Assumptions

  • A detailed code analysis was performed to summarize the design criteria and fire scenarios applicable to the tunnel.
  • The analysis was based on the approved smoke ventilation system design and the performance parameters of the selected jet fans provided by the client.

CFD Analysis and Computer Modeling

  • A Draft CFD Analysis Input Report was developed for the client's review, detailing the design approach, fire scenarios, and tenability criteria.
  • A computer model was created using Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) to simulate the agreed-upon fire scenarios and the proposed smoke ventilation systems.

Final Report and Technical Support

  • A Final CFD Analysis Report was developed and submitted, summarizing the simulation results and validating the system's compliance with NFPA 502.
  • Ongoing technical consultation was provided for the client to answer questions related to the modeling and analysis.

Project Outcome

The project successfully revalidated the Qashashia Tunnel's smoke ventilation system through a rigorous CFD analysis. The computer modeling demonstrated that the system, with the selected jet fans, would maintain tenable conditions in the event of a fire, ensuring the safety of occupants. The final report provided the necessary documentation for client review and subsequent approval from the Civil Defence.
